Kindergarten Math Skills Covered:

Although this is designed for Kindergarten, you could use a variety of these worksheets with Pre-K students as well. Learn more about teaching math in Preschool here.

Here are the math skills you’ll find on the included pages:

Counting and writing numbers

Addition within 10

Sequencing (what number comes next?)

Count and graph (coloring a bar graph)

Recognizing even and odd numbers

Counting by 2’s

Counting by 5’s

Subtraction within 10

Count & represent quantities on a ten frame

Altogether there are 10 kindergarten math worksheets in the pdf file.

Prepping the Materials:

For the most part, all you need to do is print the page(s) you need and pass them out to students, along with colored pencils or crayons!

For the even and odd pages, students will need scissors and glue to cut and paste as they sort the even numbers from the odd numbers.

Interactive Kindergarten Math Worksheets:

The goal with these worksheets is to provide meaningful practice in a way that is fun and useful for building a deep understanding.

This means you will find fun safari animals on each page that kids can color, improving their fine motor skills alongside their math skills.

You’ll also find visual models to help kids “see” math, numbers and quantities, because this is essential for the brain to learn and comprehend math.

It also means kids will have the opportunity to engage with math and apply it, rather than simply spitting out answers through rules or memorization.

For example, you will find a graphing page in this download that encompasses a variety of skills in one activity.

To begin, students must count and color each type of animal. I recommend they keep track of their count using tally marks. This is yet another important subitizing visual for kids to “see” a quantity in a new way.

Then they color in the corresponding number of bars on the bar graph to represent each animal.

This allows them to see how many there are of each type all in one place, and easily compare numbers.

As a follow up, ask your students questions to make sense of the data in their graph, such as:

Are there more monkeys or zebras? How do you know?

What number of animals is the greatest? The least? How do you know?

If there were 2 more rhinos, how many would there be?

How many more monkeys to we need to make 5? How many more hippos would we need?

Combine the Worksheets with Hands On Materials:

If it’s helpful or necessary, encourage your kids to grab hands on manipulatives to help them solve the problems.

For example, to add or subtract, they can use blocks or other small objects to represent the problem and solve it.

Or when sorting the even and odd numbers, encourage them to count out the total number using blocks and then try to put the blocks into two equal groups.

If they can split it into two equal groups with no block leftover, they know the number is even. Otherwise, it is odd.

Obviously, some of the numbers on the worksheets are too big to count out and divide with hands on objects, but encourage those who are struggling to do so with the smaller numbers first.

Then ask them if they notice any patterns to help them with the bigger numbers.

If they’re still struggling, encourage them to keep track of the numbers 1-10 on a white board (sort them even v. odd) and then see if they notice a pattern. If not, continue up to 20.

Lastly, you’ll also find a page to represent numbers in a ten frame. Ten frames are another helpful way for students to visualize numbers, as well as deepen their understanding of our base ten system. It will be essential as they get older that students can recognize ways to “make ten.” This means knowing pairs of numbers whose sum is equal to ten.

As with the graphing exercise, follow up the activity with questions such as:

How many more giraffes are needed to make ten?

How can we use the ten frame to solve 10 – 4?

Can you write an addition equation to represent how many more hippos are needed to make ten?

Overall, I hope this collection of kindergarten math worksheets provides a useful overview of important math skills, whether you use them as end of year review, along with each corresponding math unit, as a homework packet, in your sub plans or any other time of the year!

When developing fraction sense, this is an essential part of any fraction unit. When students understand this concept it can help them compare fractions and even order them. It will even help students simplify fractions.

What is it?

Equivalent fractions! And like most concepts, there are numerous ways to teach it. Today I want to share a fun and simple equivalent fractions game printable that incorporates multiple representations.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-84562 aligncenter" src="https://mathgeekmama.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Equivalent-fractions-game-PIN.jpg" alt="Need extra practice with fractions? This equivalent fractions game printable is the perfect way to challenge kids to find an equivalent fraction and match it to the visual model!
Teaching Equivalent Fractions

Visual Models

Using a visual model to teach equivalent fractions is essential. Though there are many ways to do this, I love pulling out pattern blocks. You can find an equivalent fraction to 1/2 in a matter of minutes. How?

Here’s an example:

First, have the children put down two hexagons.

Next, have the children put a trapezoid on each hexagon to represent 1/2.

Finally, have them fill up one trapezoid with triangles.

Now the students can see that 1/2 can also be 3/6.

(If they struggle to figure out the denominator, you can have the students fill the whole hexagons with triangles.)

You can get more ideas for using pattern blocks to work on equivalent fractions here, or model fractions using food (Hershey’s chocolate bars work well ).

Number Lines

Number lines are another great way to help children visualize equivalent fractions. When you create one number line and then place another directly underneath children can find equivalent fractions. In this example, children can easily see that 1/2 is equal to 2/4!

You may also want to combine these fraction tiles with a number line to help them better connect the ideas and correctly visualize the various fractions.

Get a number line for equivalent fractions here.

Equation

The “traditional” way of teaching fractions is through an equation, and it is still important to teach this while you teach students through number lines and models.

We all know that 1/2 x 2/2 = 2/4, but children need to taught this equation too!

But rather than starting here, help them to “see” and develop their understanding first, then help them to connect the equation to the visual model.

How to Play this Visual Equivalent Fractions Game

The game is very simple to play, with two levels.

The object of the game is to be the first player to reach the finish.

The first board is filled with easy fraction models such as 1/2, 1/3, 3/4, etc.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-84523" src="https://mathgeekmama.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/equivalent-fraction-game-.jpg" alt="Need extra practice with fractions?
The next board has fractions that are a little harder like 3/8 and 4/5.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-84524" src="https://mathgeekmama.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/equivalent-fraction-game-board.jpg" alt="Need extra practice with fractions?
To begin, players draw a fraction card and then have to find the closest equivalent fraction model on the game board.

(I suggest that you have them prove that the fractions are equivalent by having them show a number line, visual model, or equation using their white board.)

If a player draws a picture card, they move to that picture on the board even if it is moving backwards.

It is then player’s two turn, and they follow the same procedures!

Players take turns until they have an equivalent fraction that is not in front of their game piece. They then move to the END space!

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-84525" src="https://mathgeekmama.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/equivalent-fraction-game-square.jpg" alt="Need extra practice with fractions?
The first player to reach the end wins!

Children enjoy practicing and reviewing math concepts with games. They also enjoy challenging each other to “prove” their answer! So I hope they enjoy practicing with this equivalent fractions game printable.

Measuring is one of those early math skills that is incredibly important to learn and practice. It must be precise if you are hanging something on the wall, or building something, or needing dimensions. Recently we were given a Scanorama science book to review, and I used it as a springboard for a fun, hands on measuring activity with my kids!

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-25643" src="https://mathgeekmama.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Scanorama-Measuring-Dinosaurs-pin.jpg" alt="If your kids love dinosaurs, they will have a blast with this measuring activity based on the Scanorama: Dinosaurs book from Solver Dolphin Books!
*Please Note: I received this book free of charge and was compensated for my time in writing this review. All opinions, however, are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.
Measuring Dinosaurs Activity for Kids:

After receiving the book, I left it out for the kids to discover, look through and read on their own. This piqued their interest and they began asking to read it together. My older two would also share fun facts they learned about certain dinosaurs.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-25638" src="https://mathgeekmama.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Scanorama-Dinosaurs-activity.jpg" alt="If your kids love dinosaurs, they will have a blast with this measuring activity based on the Scanorama: Dinosaurs book from Solver Dolphin Books!
Eventually, we sat down to explore the book together to search for answers to some of their questions. I also showed them the slides and we compared the bones and their sizes.

This book is SO packed with information, it definitely requires more than one read through!

So after we read and compared the different dinosaurs, I pointed out the various sizes of some of their favorites.

Did you know that a Tyrannosaurus Rex would be anywhere from 33 to 43 feet long and had the largest teeth of any land dinosaur?

Because this book is organized so nicely by type of dinosaur, we were able to compare and contrast the different types by size.

As we considered just how large some of these great animals were, however, it because clear that these numbers are difficult for young kids to comprehend.

A Diplodocus is 80-100 feet long? Sounds big, but just how big is it?

So rather than just reading about the sizes of dinosaurs, we decided to actually measure them and compare!

Materials Needed for Dinosaur Measuring Activity:

If you would like to measure dinosaurs with your kids, it’s very simple and only requires a few materials:

Scanorama: Dinosaurs

Sidewalk chalk

Measuring tape (or a large piece of string and a ruler)

A quick note: we used this beautiful book, but other books about dinosaurs that include measurements would also work! Or, you could do a quick google search or watch some kids friendly videos on YouTube to learn about different types of dinosaurs and their sizes.

Once you’ve gathered the materials, just decide which dinosaurs to measure!

Comparing Dinosaur Sizes:

We decided to measure the bone-headed dinosaurs first.

Each page offers the “top 5” of that particular type of dinosaur. It then gives a brief description of the animal, including the length.

Because the length is given as a range, we measured the smaller number in the range. I would then explain that this dinosaur was at least this long, maybe longer.

You could use the larger value, just be sure to be consistent. For instance, don’t measure the smaller value of the range for some dinosaurs, but the upper value for others.

To compare all five bone-headed dinosaurs, we started our measuring tape at the same place on our driveway for each dinosaur.

Then, I simply held it while my kids pulled out the measuring tape to the right length.

Finally, a child who was not measuring would draw a line with chalk to show the length of the dinosaur.

Once we had drawn the length of all five, we were able to compare and they answered questions such as, “Which one is the smallest?” “Which one is the longest?”

I also challenged my daughter (second grade) to calculate how much longer the dinosaurs were than her. This was a great mental math exercise.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-25641" src="https://mathgeekmama.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Scanorama-math-with-dinosaurs.jpg" alt="If your kids love dinosaurs, they will have a blast with this measuring activity based on the Scanorama: Dinosaurs book from Solver Dolphin Books!
We also saw that two of the dinosaurs were about the same size.

Measuring 100 feet:

The longest of the bone-headed dinosaurs was approximately 30 feet. When my kids saw how long that is, they marveled at how big the dinosaurs must have been.

At this point, I brought their attention to the long-necked dinosaurs.

Some of these dinosaurs were 100 feet long (or longer!). Again, understanding the incredible size of these giants is hard for any of us to imagine, so we decided to measure out 100 feet.

This was another great opportunity to put their math skills to work. Because not only did they have to measure out 100 feet, they had to figure out how to get to 100 feet.

Our measuring tape only goes to 25 feet. This gave us the opportunity to talk about money and how many quarters are in a dollar, as well as fractions. 25 is one fourth of 100. So you have to measure 25 4 times to get to 100.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-25633" src="https://mathgeekmama.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Scanorama-dinosaur-book-lesson.jpg" alt="If your kids love dinosaurs, they will have a blast with this measuring activity based on the Scanorama: Dinosaurs book from Solver Dolphin Books!
This also meant we had to measure in the road (our driveway is definitely not 100 feet long). So if you don’t live on a quiet road away from cars like we do, you may need to find somewhere else to do this activity.

My kids took turns measuring and drawing lines with chalk until we had a 100 foot chalk line going down our street.

It was so fun to stand at either end and picture just how big the Supersaurus would have been!

My kids said, “I bet it was taller than our house,” and “I’m sure it could eat the leaves at the top of that tree!”

It was really a fun way to help them understand length, measuring and comparing numbers.

Other Math Ideas to do with Scanorama: Dinosaurs

In addition to measuring, we spent time looking at the table of contents and using it to practice skip counting

Graph the lengths of all the dinosaurs to compare: This would make a fun activity to work on graphing and analyzing a graph

Find the average lengths: Use the length ranges to practice calculating averages, and measure or graph the average length of all the dinosaurs

What ideas would you add to this list?

Are you gearing up for back to school yet? Around here they’re starting back on August 3, which seems crazy early to me! But whether you’re ready to go back or not, I want to share a fun and free resource with you: the August Problem of the Day Calendar! I’m so excited to share the newest calendar, and I hope you will find this to be a great resource for your home or classroom. This calendar is such a simple way to review important math concepts for grades K-2, as well as grades 3-5.

August Problem of the Day Calendar:

This download includes two different calendars, one that focuses on math concepts for grades K-2, and another that focuses on skills for grades 3-5.

Each calendar is a simple, black and white August 2016 calendar, which includes a math problem on each day of the month.

The unique twist is that for each problem, the solution is equal to the date.

This allows students to self-check their work, if they know what the solution should be.

It also means, however, that they could “solve” the problems without actually doing the work. So just be sure to talk through each problem and require students to justify or explain their solution.

A creative way to use this that wouldn’t allow students to simply write the answer is to turn it into a puzzle.

Simply cut the calendar apart, then let students solve the problems and glue them in the correct order onto a blank August calendar.

Other Ideas to Incorporate the August Problem of the Day Calendar:

Use it as a daily warm up as soon as class (or your homeschool day) begins

Use it with your daily calendar time and discuss other calendar math after completing the daily problem. For example, how many more days are in the month? Or, how many days until…(next holiday, someone’s birthday, etc.)

Have a “Math Challenge Monday” and complete the entire week at once

Or use it any way you please to incorporate fun math review into your school routine!

Can you believe that May is just around the corner? Are you gearing up for the end of school? Public schools here are finished pretty early, so they are counting down the days! We are not quite there yet, however, so we’re going to plow ahead to the end of May and celebrate the end of our year in early June. But it’s all good! Because I have a brand new May math problem of the day calendar to squeeze in some daily math challenges! Similar to my past calendars, this is packed with all kinds of math skills to review as you wrap up the school year.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-11841" src="https://mathgeekmama.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/May-Math-Problem-of-the-day-Calendars.jpg" alt="This fun and unique daily math challenge is a great way to weave a little math into your day!
*Please Note: This post contains affiliate links which help support the work of this site. Read our full disclosure here.*

How to Use the May Problem of the Day Calendar:

If this is the first time you’re trying out my problem of the day calendars, let me explain. This is more than simply a math problem to solve each day of the month.

These are unique because the solution is equal to the date.

This allows for kids to self-check.

This is also helpful if the problem is a little more advanced than your child is used to, because though they may not know how to solve it right away, they know what the solution is supposed to be.

They can then use problem solving strategies and prior knowledge to try and solve it.

Obviously, you will want to use the daily problem to have a math discussion, because kids could simply write the answer without doing the math. So just be sure they know they must explain their thinking for each problem.

And as always, these calendars are in black and white on a single page for easy printing.

Spring is in full force around here, and that means warmer weather, beautiful flowers and one of my kids favorites: sidewalk chalk. I love to see how excited and creative they get when they’re handed a brand new box of sidewalk chalk! One of our favorite things to do with chalk is to play games like this number line race, or of course the more traditional game of hopscotch. I recently took the kids outside and added a really fun twist to help prepare my daughter for multiplication: Skip Counting Hopscotch! This is a great multiplication game for 2nd grade, as it will prepare kids to understand and learn the facts.

My daughter is 7 and nearing the end of first grade, so the traditional game of hopscotch, while fun, is not really what she would consider a math challenge.

I will soon be introducing her to multiplication, however, and wanted to find some fun ways to review skip counting so that when the time comes I can help her see the connection between multiplication and skip counting. This is a fun and simple multiplication game for 2nd grade (or even 3rd graders).

While there are lots of ways to practice, and obviously we could have done some sort of worksheet, I’m always looking for ways to practice that let my kids get up and move and get outside. And all you need is a handful of sidewalk chalk!

Plus, this was a fun way to introduce my son (age 6) to skip counting as well!

Setting Up Skip Counting Hopscotch:

I wanted to practice counting by 2’s and 5’s, so we started by drawing two different hopscotch games.

And I explained that it would be more like a maze, so we tried to make it a little more challenging than the traditional hopscotch game.

Then I went through each game board and filled in the numbers. I wanted her to have to choose the correct skip counting numbers, so rather than just having the numbers in order (like in a regular game of hopscotch), I had choices throughout so that she would have to jump on the right squares.

She didn’t really have any trouble finding the right numbers, and recited them as she counted and jumped through the game.

It was a great exercise for my son, though, because as I called out the numbers to introduce him to skip counting, he was also able to work on recognizing numbers from 0-65.

If you have more than one child, you could also draw multiple hopscotch games with the same numbers and let the kids race through to see who can skip count the fastest. Or, they can take turns with a stopwatch.

And of course, if you’re using this as a multiplication game for 2nd grade or 3rd grade, you can work on skip counting by other numbers as well (not just 2 or 5)

Just be sure they know they have to be fast and accurate!

Once the rain washes away our current skip counting hopscotch games, I plan to draw some more to work on skip counting by 3’s and 10’s.

I also think it would be a lot of fun to draw a hundreds chart in the driveway and then practice skip counting by jumping through the hundreds chart!

Practicing math facts or learning to count and recognize numbers can be challenging for young learners. And it can be tedious and boring if the only way they practice is sitting at a desk doing worksheets. Puddle Jump is a simple game that only takes about five minutes to prep, but gives kids a chance to practice math and get moving at the same time!

I love spending some time each day looking at the calendar with my kids and learning things like the days of the week, and exploring math concepts by asking questions such as, “How many days until Daddy’s birthday?” or “How many more days are in January than February?” But lately, we’ve gotten out of the habit, as my kids know the days of the week, months of the year, etc. So I came up with a new idea to still spend some time with the calendar, but also having a quick and easy math review each day: a printable math problem of the day calendar!

This calendar is appropriate for grades 1-2, and covers a variety of math skills, including addition and subtraction, greater than or less than and word problems.

What’s unique about this calendar, though, is that the solution is equal to the day of the month.

So as my kids solve the problem of the day, they will also learn what day it is, and we can have other conversations related to the month of February as well!

This is a great opportunity to spark math conversations! (Find more ideas for Math Talk here).

Obviously, this could be a problem if they already know the date. Then they can “solve” the math problem without actually doing the math.

But I’m not concerned, because I will be doing this with them, and asking questions like, “Can you prove that’s the right answer?” or “Can you show me how you got that?”

And knowing what the solution is supposed to be is a great way for self-checking. For instance, if my daughter knows that the date is February 12 (and the solution should therefore be 12), but gets 14 as the answer, she will know to go back and fix her error.

I also tried to keep this printable simple, so it is just one page, with a box to fill in the solution right on each calendar day.

It’s also black and white, for easy printing, and so kids can color the fun February themed pictures if they want (my kids love to color, so I thought they would like that).

I’m hoping to continue this for each month of 2016, so if you like the idea and would like to see additional grade levels, let me know!

I hope you enjoy this printable math problem of the day calendar!
