September Problem of the Day Calendar

I can hardly believe I’m saying this, but August is almost over. And if you haven’t already gone back to school, you will be soon! We had a wonderful break from the normal routines this Summer, but I always look forward to cooler weather and the fresh start that Fall brings. To help you get back into a routine and practice important math skills, I’m excited to share my newest math calendar! This September Problem of the Day Calendar can be used in so many ways, and is just the thing for daily math review.

Why this calendar is different:

These calendars are simple, one page black and white calendars. This makes it easy to print and use, and fun to color! Then, there is a different math problem on each day of the month.

But what’s unique is that for each day of the month of September, the solution to the math problem is equal to the date.

This makes it easy to check for accuracy, but also easy for kids to write the answer without doing the math. One way to combat this is to require kids to explain their reasoning (how they solved it).

Or combine this with a math journal and require students to write out their explanation or show their steps.

Or for another fun way to mix things up, read the idea below, which removes this challenge altogether! 😉

How to Use the September Problem of the Day Calendar:

Incorporate these calendars into your home or classroom in several different ways.

First, use it as part of your daily calendar time. Discuss the date, complete the problem of the day, and any other calendar math.

If you have older kids, you may not have “calendar time.” But this makes a great daily warm-up! Before beginning the lessons for the day, students can get in the habit of completing the problem of the day.

If you’re a classroom teacher, this would make a great resource to send home with parents. Encouraging parents to be involved in their child’s math education can be a challenge. This simple one page calendar is easy to use, and provides an easy daily math problem to discuss with their kids.

You could also use it once a week, as a “math challenge Monday,” for example, and let students complete an entire week at once.

And finally, if you really want to challenge kids and turn this into a unique activity, cut the calendar up into daily squares and turn it into a puzzle.

Then mix up the dates and let students solve all the problems at once. As they solve them, they glue the problems onto the correct days on a blank September calendar!

Of course, there are dozens of other ways you can use this calendar. But most of all, I want it to be a fun time of math learning and discussion!
