Teaching kids in Grade 4 about roman numerals is ok, but addition and subtraction of those numbers, especially big numbers, complicates it for kids, and makes them loose interest, especially that they are given to much material and ways in school

After completing a lesson on Roman numerals, my fifth grader decided to write all of his dates in Roman numerals. Lasted for over a month! He loved it – as if writing in some secret code since his three younger sisters couldn’t read it. I suspect he will never forget what 2015 looks like in Roman numerals. Best yet – it was all his idea!!

Thank you for some excellent links to additional practice. Three of our prominent clocks are in Roman numerals, forcing the kids to recognize 1 – 12, but I don’t think the younger ones really comprehend why those lines are in such strange combinations. 🙂
