July Math Problem of the Day Calendar

Summer is in full swing around here, and I was concerned that there wouldn’t be much interest in a July Math calendar. Boy was I wrong! Thank you for all the great feedback, I am so overjoyed that so many of you use and love these calendars, and more importantly, that your kids love them! 🙂 So today I’m excited to share the July Math Problem of the Day Calendar, as well as lots of ideas for how to use it!

July Math Problem of the Day Calendar:

If you’re unfamiliar with these calendars, let me explain how they work. Included in the download are two different black and white calendars, one geared towards Kindergarten-2nd grade, and one geared towards 3rd-5th grade.

Each calendar includes a math problem on each day of the month.

The unique twist? The solution is equal to the date!

This can be used as a fun, daily math review, or morning work. Just be sure to have kids justify their answer, or show and explain the solution, to make sure they’re not just writing what they know the solution to be. 😉

If you’re taking a break for the summer, but still want to review basic math skills, you could work on the calendar once a week, and have your kids complete all the problems for that week in one sitting.

Or as so many of you shared last month, you could cut up the calendar to turn it into a puzzle! Then kids have to solve all the problems (not knowing the solutions) and glue them in the correct order on a blank calendar.

There are so many ways to incorporate this into your routine to make math review fun, so I would encourage you to change things up once in a while.

Math Topics Covered on the K-2 Calendar:

  • Addition and subtraction within 20
  • Place value
  • How many more/how many less
  • Time
  • Money (new!)
  • Word problems involving addition and subtraction
  • Simple multiplication (equal groups)
  • Skip counting
  • Math vocabulary such as sum and difference

Math Topics Covered on the 3-5 Calendar:

  • Addition and subtraction of 3-4 digit numbers
  • Multiplication and division
  • Place value
  • Adding mixed fractions (like denominators)
  • Word problems involving multiplication and division
  • Math vocabulary such as product, quotient
  • Multi-step problems

Each calendar has a variety of problems, and lots of different wordings so that kids can begin to recognize various structures (such as “How much more is…” to represent subtraction).

One last thing to note about this month’s calendar: because of the length of the month, there is some overlap of the days and I had to put the 24th and the 31st in the same square.

I thought that was a better option that making the entire thing smaller. This just means that there isn’t much space on those days to write the solution. Other than that the calendar is the same!

I’ll be honest, it takes a lot of work and time to create these calendars, so it makes me so happy to know that they’re being put to good use!
