Materials Needed for the Math Calendars:

  • Printable calendar (get it at the end of this post)
  • Math journal to explain work (optional)

So what’s different about these daily math calendars? While they are simple, black and white calendars with a new math problem for every day of the month, there’s a fun twist:

Each day the solution to the problem is equal to the date!

This means the calendar is self checking, because if kids get an answer different from the date they know they did something wrong.

How to Use the Problem of the Day Calendars:

This could make it a fun addition to your daily calendar time if you teach younger ones.

But this can also mean that older kids simply write the solution without actually doing any math.

If you combine the daily math problem with a math journal, you can give a variety of prompts to extend their thinking and learning to help resist this temptation.

For example, ask them to draw a picture of how they solved it. Or ask them to explain how they solved it and then write a problem of their own with that solution.

Another idea is to cut the calendar up like a puzzle and then have kids solve all the problems at once and glue them into a blank calendar.

Included in this download for January are 3 different calendars. Though I have labeled them as grades K-2, grades 3-5 and grades 6-8 here, they are simply labeled levels 1, 2 and 3 in the download.

That way if you need to use a lower level for differentiation in a single classroom, your kids won’t be put off by something that says Kindergarten, for instance.
