Telling Time with The Grouchy Ladybug! {FREE!}

Last year about this time, my kids and I had a set of caterpillars that we watched form cocoons and transform into beautiful butterflies. During the process, we spent time learning about their life cycle, reading butterfly books and doing butterfly-themed math. This year, I plan to have a ladybug themed week, read more great books, and do lots of fun ladybug math! One book that is always a favorite is The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle. This can be used to teach important character lessons, as well as math! Read on to get a fun set of Telling Time with The Grouchy Ladybug math printables!

As we get closer to the end of the school year, I’m looking for ways to weave in fun review to help reinforce the things my kids have learned this year. This will include lots of games and fun math stories, such as The Grouchy Ladybug!

Telling time with the grouchy ladybug

This is a fun book for kids, and can be used with preschoolers to learn about animals, and compare sizes (the animals increase in size as the story goes on).

You could also use this with Kindergarteners who are learning to tell time. You can read the time on each page and then point them to the clock.

I am planning to let my daughter use it as a fun way to practice reading and review telling time at the same time.

Telling Time with The Grouchy Ladybug:

The first activity included in this download is a set of 12 task cards and a corresponding page to record the answers.

I suggest printing the 12 task cards on card stock and then laminating them for durability. Then this activity can be used over and over.

Each card asks about a detail in the story, and requires kids to look back to find the time that it happened.

For instance, it might say, “What time did the ladybug meet the skunk?”

Kids then find the appropriate page in the story and the corresponding time, and then record their answer on the answer page. They must write the time on a digital and analog clock.

If your kids are not yet reading, you can do this activity together. Simply read the cards to them and let them find the correct page using the pictures. You can then look at the clock together to determine the time.

Because almost all of the times in the story are to the hour, I wanted to have some additional telling time review for my daughter.

In addition to the task cards that go along with the story, there are also two ladybug time matching pages.

These pages include matching the digital time to the correct clock, as well as matching time words to the correct clock.

The task cards are in color, but the recording page and worksheets are black and white for easy printing.

Also included in this download are answer keys to the task card activity as well as the matching pages.

Firefly Catch Printable Game

Another fun game to play after reading this would be Firefly Catch, a simple game to work on making ten, counting, addition and subtraction!
